Inspection chamber

Short definition

An inspection chamber is a built-up access pit — usually concrete, brick, or precast — on a sewer or building-sewer pipe at a junction, change of direction, or interval along a long run. It’s sized for visual inspection and rodding from above. In US residential plumbing, a cleanout at grade typically replaces it; full inspection chambers are more common in commercial and multi-family work.

What it is

The inspection chamber is built around the pipe at a strategic access point. The bottom is benched in sloped concrete to keep flow self-cleansing through the chamber, and a removable cover at grade lets a worker drop a snake, jet head, or camera in. Where the chamber is large enough for a person to enter, it’s called a manhole instead.

By international plumbing practice, inspection chambers are placed at every change of direction, at every junction, and at intervals along long straight runs. UK and many Commonwealth codes are quite specific about IC spacing; US residential code generally allows a simple cleanout at grade in place of a built chamber.

Why it matters to a homeowner

If you live in a single-family WA home, you almost certainly have cleanouts rather than inspection chambers. But in a multi-family building, a townhouse complex, or any commercial property, inspection chambers are common at the building-sewer-meets-property-line transition and along the run to the public main. When a quote references an “IC at the property line” or “rebuild the IC bench,” they’re talking about a built access structure, not a simple pipe fitting.

Common variants / not the same as

  • Inspection chamber vs. manhole. Inspection chambers are too small for a person to enter; manholes are sized for human entry.
  • Inspection chamber vs. cleanout. A cleanout is a single capped fitting on one pipe. An inspection chamber is a built structure with multi-pipe access.
  • Trap pit vs. inspection chamber. A trap pit houses an intercepting trap; an inspection chamber is plain access.
