Short definition
An alcove tub or shower is the standard residential bath layout where the tub or shower fits between three walls — left, back, and right — with the front edge open for entry. The dominant residential length is 60 inches; drain orientation is specified left-hand or right-hand at order.
What it is
Standard alcove dimensions:
- Tub: 60 inches long by 30 to 32 inches wide by 14 to 18 inches high.
- Shower base: 60 by 32 inches or 60 by 36 inches (corner units run smaller).
Drain placement is fixed at order time: left-hand drain or right-hand drain, dictated by which side of the tub the plumbing wall sits on. Some “universal” alcove tubs accept either orientation, simplifying replacement when you don’t know which way the original drain ran.
The alcove configuration is the most common in WA tract and production housing built from the 1960s onward — the three-wall enclosure simplifies framing, finishing, and waterproofing.
Why it matters to a homeowner
When you replace an alcove tub, three numbers matter: length, width, and drain orientation. A 60-inch alcove tub doesn’t fit a 48-inch or 54-inch alcove without reframing — this is the painful renovation surprise in older WA homes. Verify your existing alcove dimensions and drain side before buying.
Cost ranges:
- Acrylic alcove tub: $300 to $800 part.
- Cast-iron alcove tub: $700 to $2,000 part.
- Full alcove tub-shower install (tub plus tile plus plumbing plus demo): $1,500 to $5,000 depending on scope.
Larger remodels often convert an alcove tub to a walk-in shower — that move escapes the alcove constraint entirely and gives you more functional bathing space at the cost of resale value (many buyers want at least one bathtub in the home).
Common variants
- Alcove tub vs. drop-in tub. Drop-in goes into a built-up surround (apron or platform); not three-walled.
- Alcove tub vs. freestanding (clawfoot). Freestanding has no walls.
- Alcove shower vs. corner (neo-angle) shower vs. walk-in shower. Different stall geometries; different fits in a given footprint.
