Short definition

To descale a showerhead, soak it in white vinegar for 30 minutes to overnight, then brush the spray face. The vinegar dissolves calcium-carbonate scale that’s blocked the spray nozzles and weakened flow. Spokane and Eastside hard-water homes need to descale every 2–3 months; soft-water Seattle homes rarely need it.

What it is

Limescale is calcium and magnesium carbonate that precipitates out of hard water and builds up on any surface where water sits or evaporates — especially the spray face of a showerhead. The crust blocks individual spray nozzles and produces sputtering, weak, or directionally-wrong streams.

Two ways to dissolve it:

Option A — In place (no removal):

  1. Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar.
  2. Tie the bag around the showerhead so the spray face is submerged.
  3. Soak 30 minutes (light scale) to overnight (heavy scale).
  4. Remove bag; run shower for 1 minute to flush.
  5. Brush remaining deposits with an old toothbrush.

Option B — Remove (better for heavy scale or stuck nozzles):

  1. Unscrew the showerhead from the arm.
  2. Soak in a bowl of white vinegar 30 minutes to overnight.
  3. Brush the spray face.
  4. Reinstall with new plumber’s tape on the threads.

Vinegar (acetic acid, ~5%) dissolves carbonate scale. Commercial CLR works too, but vinegar is cheaper and food-safe. Baking soda alone does not dissolve hard scale.

Why it matters to a homeowner

Descaling restores 80-100% of original flow on a hard-water showerhead in under an hour. The alternative — replacing the showerhead — costs $20-$80 and doesn’t fix the underlying water chemistry: a new head will scale again on the same schedule. Spokane and Eastside homes that ignore showerhead scale also ignore aerators, dishwashers, and water-heater elements, all of which scale in parallel.

When a plumber says “your water heater is scaled” or “you should consider a softener,” they’re describing the same chemistry that’s slowing your shower. The descaling cadence is a practical hardness gauge.

Common failure modes (of the showerhead)

  • Mineral encrustation. The main one in WA hard-water areas.
  • Rubber spray-tip degradation from chlorine/chloramine. Replace head, not descale.
  • Internal flow restrictor stuck. Sometimes scale lodges behind the restrictor — full removal and clean.
  • Calcified swivel ball. Vinegar soak helps; sometimes needs replacement.

Common variants

  • Descale (mineral fix) vs. low-flow conversion. Different problem; the latter is a fixture replacement.
  • Vinegar (acidic, dissolves carbonate) vs. CLR (commercial chelator) vs. baking soda alone. Vinegar and CLR work; baking soda alone doesn’t.
  • Showerhead descale vs. aerator descale. Same mechanism, different fixture, same vinegar soak.

Washington note

Cleaning cadence by region:

  • Spokane and east of Cascades (7–13 GPG hardness): every 2–3 months.
  • Eastside Bellevue / Sammamish / Issaquah (8–15 GPG, Cascade Water Alliance area): every 6 months.
  • Seattle / Tacoma / Olympia (Cedar/Tolt 1–2 GPG, very soft): 12+ months or as needed.

Soft Cedar/Tolt water in Seattle rarely produces visible scale on showerheads. If a Seattle showerhead is sputtering, suspect an aerator-style flow restrictor stuck or a deteriorated rubber spray face — not minerals.
