Short definition
Blue-green water stains on porcelain — most often at sink drains, tub bottoms, faucet bases, and toilet traps — are dissolved copper precipitating where water dries. They’re the chronic warning sign of copper leaching and pitting corrosion, most common in pre-1990 Seattle homes on soft Cedar/Tolt water. Pre-pinhole-leak signal that typically precedes visible leaks by years.
What it is
When water dissolves copper from pipe walls and that water sits long enough to evaporate at a fixture, the copper is left behind as a blue-green deposit on the porcelain.
