Short definition

Hilltop low water pressure is the pressure deficit caused by the elevation difference between your home and the supply main. Each foot of elevation costs about 0.43 psi of static head. A house 100 feet above the supply main loses 43 psi to elevation alone — before any flow-driven friction loss. Common in higher-elevation Seattle, Bellevue, and other hilly Pacific Northwest neighborhoods.

What it is

Static head pressure follows a simple rule: pressure = elevation × 0.433 psi/ft. The water column from the supply main up to your fixture has to be supported by mains pressure; whatever pressure is left after subtracting the elevation cost is what your fixtures see.

A neighborhood at the bottom of a hill might enjoy 90 psi from the same mains pressure that delivers 50 psi at the top of the hill. Utilities run booster pumps to maintain mains pressure at higher elevations, but individual homes at the very top of pressure zones can still see lower static pressure than valley homes.

Why it matters to a homeowner

If you bought a house at the top of Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, Magnolia, Beacon Hill, Phinney Ridge, View Ridge, or any high-elevation Eastside neighborhood and are unhappy with shower pressure, elevation is likely contributing.

Remediation options:

  • Booster pump system at the meter — typically $1,500 to $4,000 installed, adds head to the whole-house supply.
  • Larger inside-main supply pipe (3/4-inch to 1-inch) — reduces friction loss component, helps marginal cases.
  • Hot-water recirculation pump — addresses the related “long wait for hot water” complaint at hilltop ends of long runs (it’s a separate problem, often confused with pressure).
  • Confirm utility pressure first. Test at the meter with a hose-bib gauge — if the meter reads 35 psi, you’re getting low pressure from the utility, not from elevation alone.

Common variants and what hilltop pressure is not

  • Hilltop low pressure (elevation-driven) vs. whole-house low pressure from other causes (partially closed valve, tuberculated supply line, undersized service line). A pressure test distinguishes them.
  • Hilltop low pressure vs. high pressure damage — same hill produces both. The downhill homes get over-pressure; the uphill homes get under-pressure.
