Short definition

A pinched or undersized supply pipe is a section of supply piping that delivers less flow than the home demands — because it was kinked or crushed during installation, sized too small for the fixture count it serves, or pinched by framing that bears down on it. Small reductions in pipe inside diameter cause outsized reductions in flow capacity.

What it is

Pipe diameter and flow capacity are not linearly related. The standard friction-loss math (the Hazen-Williams equation) shows that flow capacity grows roughly with the 5/2 power of the pipe inside diameter — meaning a small reduction in ID has a much larger effect on capacity than the diameter change suggests. A pipe that’s been pinched to 80% of its original ID can lose 40% or more of its flow capacity at the same supply pressure.

Common ways supply pipe gets restricted:

  • PEX pinched at framing crossings when the installer didn’t use a stud-protection plate or wraparound isolator.
  • Soft copper kinked at a tight bend the installer couldn’t quite make cleanly.
  • Undersized half-inch supply trying to feed a modern bathroom group designed for three-quarter-inch.
  • Frost damage partly crushing a buried PE service line.
  • DIY irrigation manifolds built from half-inch PVC where three-quarter is needed.

A pinched pipe is mechanically distinct from a tuberculated old galvanized line — both restrict flow, but the cause and the fix are different.

Why it matters to a homeowner

If you have low water pressure that’s specific to one part of the house, or low flow when several fixtures run at once but normal flow with just one, an undersized or pinched section is a leading suspect — especially after a remodel, a service-line replacement, or a frost event.

The diagnostic is often visual. After a recent renovation, ask whether the new branch runs were sized correctly for the fixture count. If a contractor stepped on a soft copper line during framing, the kink may be visible at the next exposed inspection point. For a buried service line, you may need pressure measurements at the meter and at the indoor main — a large drop between the two suggests the service line is the bottleneck.

Repairs range from straightforward (cut out a kinked section and replace with a coupling) to substantial (replace an undersized half-inch service line with a properly sized run).
