Short definition

Point-of-entry (POE) filters install where water service enters your house, treating everything; point-of-use (POU) filters install at a single fixture, usually the kitchen sink. POE handles system-wide problems (hardness, chloramine, sediment); POU handles drinking-water polish (lead, dissolved solids, taste). Most WA homes with treatment needs use both.

What it is

Water-filtration choices come down to two placement decisions:

Point-of-entry (POE) — also called whole-house or service-entrance:

Installed before the water heater, where the supply line enters the house. Treats both hot and cold water for every fixture. Sized for peak household demand (typically 10+ GPM residential).

Use POE for:

  • Chlorine or chloramine removal — affects every fixture, every drink, and shower steam.
  • Sediment — protects every fixture and appliance.
  • Hardness (softener) — system-wide scale prevention.
  • pH adjustment — system-wide corrosion control.
  • Iron and manganese — system-wide staining prevention.

Point-of-use (POU):

Installed at a single fixture — usually under the kitchen sink, sometimes at the refrigerator or a dedicated drinking-water tap. Treats only that fixture.

Use POU for:

  • Lead removal (RO at kitchen) — only need it where you drink.
  • Drinking-water polishing (RO, fine carbon, lead-removal NSF/ANSI 53).
  • Reducing dissolved solids — RO at the kitchen sink.
  • Taste improvement — when you only care about the drinking-water tap.

The standard filter-train ordering rule: sediment → iron / oxidizing → softener → carbon → POU RO. Each stage handles what the next stage isn’t designed for.

Why it matters to a homeowner

The placement decision has big cost implications. A whole-house RO system is expensive and often unnecessary — RO is overkill for shower water and bath water, and the wastewater rate makes whole-house RO impractical for typical residential use. POU RO at the kitchen handles drinking water at a fraction of the cost.

The opposite mistake is treating system-wide problems with a POU filter. If your whole house is on chloraminated water, a single under-sink filter at the kitchen doesn’t help your shower, your laundry, or any other tap. Chloramine should be removed at POE.

Decision logic for typical WA scenarios:

  • Hardness throughout house (Spokane, Eastside) → POE softener.
  • Lead concern at the drinking tap (pre-1986 home) → POU RO at kitchen.
  • Chloramine taste at every faucet (SPU-served home) → POE catalytic carbon.
  • Iron staining at laundry and fixtures (well home) → POE iron filter.
  • Drinking-water polishing for kid or pregnancy → POU RO at the kitchen sink.
  • Combined approach (typical Spokane / Eastside) → POE softener plus POU RO.

When a contractor recommends “a whole-house filter system,” ask which contaminants they’re targeting and where that placement makes sense. Sometimes the recommendation is right; sometimes a POU at the kitchen is the cheaper and more effective answer.

Common failure modes

  • Wrong choice — POU RO won’t address system-wide hardness; whole-house RO is overkill for drinking water.
  • POE softener with no POU RO — kid drinking softened water with elevated sodium; consider RO for sodium removal.
  • POE filter installed without bypass — can’t service without shutting off the house.
  • POU under-sink filter installed without an existing port — adds a dedicated faucet hole on the sink.

Common variants

  • POE = whole-house = “service entrance” filter.
  • POU = single fixture = “kitchen sink” filter.
  • POU includes: under-sink, refrigerator filter, pitcher filter, faucet-mount filter.
  • POE includes: cartridge filter, softener, iron filter, pH neutralizer, UV.
