Short definition
The loud BANG you hear at the end of a washing-machine fill cycle is water hammer — the solenoid valve closes in milliseconds and the moving water column rebounds as a pressure spike. The fix is a PDI Size A water-hammer arrestor at each hose-bib. Front-loaders make it worse than top-loaders because their solenoids close even faster.
What it is
Washing machines use solenoid valves to control fill water. When the fill cycle ends, the solenoid snaps closed in tens of milliseconds. If there’s no captive-air cushion in the supply line — no modern arrestor and no functioning legacy air chamber — that pressure spike echoes through the wall as a bang. Sometimes you’ll hear two or three bangs as the spike rebounds.
Diagnosis: this is water hammer, treat as such:
- Test home static pressure at a hose bib. If it’s above 80 psi, install a PRV first — high pressure makes everything worse.
- Install water-hammer arrestors (PDI Size A is typical) at each washing-machine hose-bib.
- If pre-1990 home with original air chambers, drain-and-refill the house once before installing arrestors — sometimes resolves the issue cheaply.
- Confirm hose connections are tight and supply hoses aren’t stiff or vibrating against framing.
Most modern washing-machine outlet boxes have integrated arrestor ports — use them. If yours doesn’t, tee a Size A arrestor into the supply line within 6 feet of the hose-bib.
Why it matters to a homeowner
The bang isn’t just annoying. Pressure spikes fatigue solenoid valves on the washer itself (premature failure), stress joints upstream (long-term leak risk), and propagate through the structure to neighbors (apartment / stacked washer concerns). Stopping it costs $25-$50 in arrestor parts and 30 minutes of work — one of the highest-ROI plumbing fixes in the home.
When a pre-purchase inspector hears banging during the inspection, it shows up in the report as “water hammer at washing machine; install arrestor recommended.” Buyers can negotiate the install pre-close or do it themselves the first weekend.
Why it got worse with the new washer
Front-loaders use solenoid valves that close even faster than older top-loader designs. A home that worked fine with a 15-year-old top-loader may bang dramatically the day a new front-loader is installed — same plumbing, faster solenoid, more pronounced spike. Installing arrestors at this transition is routine.
Common variants
- Banging at fill (solenoid close) vs. rattling during spin cycle (mechanical / drum imbalance). Different problems.
- Banging at fill vs. banging at empty (pump shutoff hammer). Less common, usually drainage-side.
- Banging at washer specifically vs. banging anywhere in the house. Washer is usually the most-noticed even when the issue is system-wide.
Washington note
WA-amended UPC §609.10 requires water-hammer arrestors at quick-acting valves on washing machines, dishwashers, and ice makers in new construction and remodels. Many pre-1995 WA homes don’t have them; modern washer outlet boxes added during a laundry remodel typically include arrestor ports.
In hilly Seattle (Queen Anne, Magnolia, West Seattle, Capitol Hill) where street pressure runs 100+ psi, washing-machine banging is amplified by the underlying high pressure. The two-fix sequence (PRV first, then arrestor) is the typical fix for these neighborhoods.
