Short definition

A flapper not sealing is the most common cause of a running toilet. The flapper rubber has hardened or warped enough that it no longer seats fully on the flush-valve seat, and tank water trickles past it into the bowl 24/7. The standard diagnostic is a dye test; the standard fix is a $5 flapper.

What it is

The dye test is the field diagnostic every WA plumber recommends:

  1. Lift the tank lid.
  2. Drop several drops of food coloring (or a Saving Water Partnership free dye tablet) into the tank.
  3. Don’t flush. Wait 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. Check the bowl. If the water in the bowl has tinted with the dye, the flapper is leaking.

Two failure patterns:

  • Phantom flush. Toilet refills briefly on its own every few hours, even with no use. Caused by a slow leak — the bowl gradually drains enough to trigger the fill valve.
  • Continuous running. Flapper leaks faster than the seat can refill. The fill valve runs continuously trying to keep up.

Both indicate flapper failure; only the severity differs.

Why it matters to a homeowner

A leaking flapper is invisible — you don’t see it on the floor, you don’t hear water running outside the bathroom — but it shows up every month on the water and sewer bill. Severe cases waste 200-plus gallons per day; typical cases waste 20 to 50 gallons. EPA estimates a flapper-leak fix saves the average household $50 to $300 per year on combined water and sewer charges.

The dye test takes five minutes. A flapper replacement takes another five. If your water bill is unusually high and you can’t find a visible leak, run the dye test before assuming there’s a buried-pipe problem.

Common variants

  • Phantom flush. Slow flapper leak causing intermittent fill cycles.
  • Continuous running. Faster flapper leak; fill valve runs nonstop.
  • Recently replaced flapper still leaks. Check the flush-valve seat — eroded seats mean even a new flapper won’t seal. Resurface (Fluidmaster 555C kit) or replace the flush valve.
