Short definition

Galvanized supply pipe corrosion is the slow rusting-from-inside of pre-1960 galvanized steel water lines. The zinc galvanizing layer wears away first; then the steel rusts, releasing iron, zinc, and small amounts of cadmium into the water and building up internal nodules (tuberculation) that strangle flow. In Washington, pre-1960 Seattle and Tacoma homes are the dominant population.

What it is

Galvanized steel pipe was the residential water-supply standard from the early 1900s through the 1950s, with copper transition through the 1960s. The pipe is steel coated inside and out with zinc; the zinc layer is sacrificial — it corrodes preferentially to protect the steel underneath.

The aging sequence:

  1. Early decades: zinc coating intact, water clean.
  2. 30–50 years in: zinc thins, especially at threaded fittings (where it was thinnest at install).
  3. 40–60 years: steel exposed at threads; rust nodules form internally (tuberculation).
  4. 50–70 years: internal diameter dramatically reduced; flow halves; rust at first-draw; pinholes at fittings.
  5. 70+ years: structural failures at threads, weeps behind walls.

Symptoms:

  • Whole-house low pressure, progressive over decades (no PRV change explains it).
  • Rusty or brown water at first draw, especially after vacancy.
  • Visible rust at threaded joints in the basement.
  • Pipe weeps at unions or threads.
  • Hot side often fails first — temperature accelerates the chemistry.

Diagnosis:

  1. Identify galvanized. Silver-gray, magnetic (refrigerator magnet sticks), dull threads, often shows rust at unions. Different from copper (orange-red, non-magnetic).
  2. Pressure test at meter vs. at fixtures. A large drop confirms internal restriction.
  3. Cut a section during repair. The cross-section shows the tubercles directly.
  4. First-draw water test for Fe, Zn, Cd. Confirms metal release.

Why it matters to a homeowner

Galvanized supply lines are 65+ years old in pre-1960 WA homes, and the failure is no longer a future problem — it’s a current one. The repipe decision (galvanized → PEX) typically runs $5,000-$15,000 for a single-family Seattle home, depending on access and finish work. Partial repipes (just bath or kitchen) create copper-to-galvanized transitions that fail faster than either metal alone (see galvanic corrosion).

The harder conversation is buying or selling a pre-1960 home. Pre-purchase inspectors in Seattle and Tacoma routinely flag galvanized supply, and the closing-table negotiation usually comes down to whether the seller credits the buyer for the repipe or the buyer accepts the work themselves. There’s no graceful answer for a home that’s actively losing pressure and producing rusty water.

When a plumber recommends repipe over patch, they’re acknowledging that fixing one pinhole on a galvanized run typically buys weeks-to-months, not years.

Common failure modes

  • Pinhole at threaded fitting. Zinc thinnest there; first to fail.
  • Whole-house pressure halving over decades. Tuberculation strangling the inside diameter.
  • Brown water at first draw, especially after vacancy.
  • Galvanic acceleration at copper-galvanized transitions from partial repipes.
  • ¾-inch effective diameter reduced to ½-inch or less by tubercles after 50+ years.

Common variants

  • Galvanized supply (water side) vs. galvanized DWV (drainage; even shorter life, often replaced).
  • Galvanized vs. black iron. Black iron is gas piping — different finish, different code, never water.
  • “Galvanized” generally = pre-1960 in PNW; rare in post-1965 WA construction.
  • Galvanized rust vs. iron-staining well water. Different cause; same red-brown visual.

Washington note

Pre-1960 Seattle and Tacoma neighborhoods are the dominant WA galvanized-supply population. Pre-1965 stock anywhere in WA is also at risk. Modern WA construction (post-1970) almost universally used copper or, more recently, PEX, so newer subdivisions don’t share this problem.

  1. Identify pipe material. A magnet on a basement supply line tells you in seconds whether it’s galvanized.
  2. First-draw water test for Fe, Zn, Pb (the era overlaps with pre-1986 lead solder).
  3. Plan for repipe — not whether, but when. Partial repipes are short-term; whole-house PEX is the durable answer.
  4. Pre-purchase scope. Inspectors should pressure-test at the meter and at fixtures and report the difference.
  5. Document for insurance. Standard homeowners policies often exclude long-term seepage from corrosion; documenting age and condition before failure helps.
