Short definition
Noisy pipes in walls have specific acoustic signatures that point to specific causes. Banging at valve close = water hammer. Steady whistle during flow = limescale or velocity issue. Tick-tick-tick during heat-up = PVC/CPVC expansion. Each pattern tells you which fix to make before you open any drywall.
What it is
Pipes can make four basic sounds, each from a different mechanism:
- Banging or hammering at valve close → water hammer. Most common at washing machine, dishwasher, ice maker, or single-handle faucet shut-off.
- Steady whistle or hiss during flow → whistling pipes. Usually limescale narrowing the pipe at a fitting, aerator, or valve seat.
- Tick-tick-tick during heat-up → PVC or CPVC expansion against tight stud holes; harmless but annoying.
- Squeal at washing machine fill → solenoid hammer, often water hammer in disguise.
- Rattle at washing machine → loose strap or supply-hose vibration.
- Vibration through structure → hard-mounted pump or undersize support spacing.
- Gurgling after recent service → trapped air, usually clears within hours of normal use.
Diagnostic order:
- Identify the trigger — which fixture or valve action makes it happen?
- Identify the acoustic character — bang, hiss, tick, rattle?
- Match the pattern to the mechanism and fix.
Most common WA cause: water hammer plus a missing or waterlogged arrestor on a washing-machine line.
Why it matters to a homeowner
The acoustic profile saves you from cutting drywall to chase a noise. A bang at every washer fill is a $30 water-hammer arrestor install, not a wall-opening investigation. A tick during heat-up is annoying but doesn’t need fixing — or you oversize the stud-bored hole by an eighth-inch the next time the wall is open.
When a plumber says “that’s water hammer” or “that’s expansion” or “that’s a fill-valve whistle,” they’re matching the same acoustic pattern. The vocabulary is the diagnostic.
Common failure modes / sources
- Water hammer at fast-closing valve. Washing machine top of list, dishwasher and ice maker close behind.
- Limescale-narrowed pipe creates whistle. Hard-water Spokane and Eastside.
- PVC/CPVC expansion against tight stud-hole during hot-water cycle. Universal in PVC-piped homes.
- Loose pipe strap or hanger. Vibrates against framing.
- Pump-mounted appliance vibration into structure. Disposers, dishwashers, well pumps.
- Trapped air after recent service. Creates gurgling; clears with normal use.
Common variants

Washington note
In hilly Seattle neighborhoods (Queen Anne, Magnolia, West Seattle, Capitol Hill), street pressure routinely runs 100+ psi. UPC requires a pressure-reducing valve when static pressure exceeds 80 psi. Without a PRV, every quick-acting valve in the house is operating near its noise (and fatigue) limit. If your home doesn’t have a PRV and you’re hearing water hammer, install a PRV first — many noises resolve as a side effect.
For pre-1990 WA homes with original air chambers, the drain-and-refill recharge sequence sometimes restores quiet for 6-24 months. The durable fix is modern arrestors at the problem fixtures.
