Short definition

When your tub backs up while you flush the toilet, the blockage is downstream of both fixtures — almost always in the main drain or side sewer. The tub is the lowest opening in the chain, so flush flow pushes wastewater up through it. In WA, the most common cause in pre-1970 homes is tree roots in the side sewer. Stop using water and call a plumber for a sewer scope.

What it is

Plumbing pipes flow downhill by gravity from your fixtures to the side sewer to the city main. When everything’s working, each fixture drains independently. When a blockage forms downstream of multiple fixtures, the next flush of water has to go somewhere — and it takes the path of least resistance, which is the lowest open drain. Usually the tub.

The diagnostic correlation is unmistakable:

  • Toilet flushes → tub bubbles or fills. Blockage is below both, in the main or side sewer.
  • Sink drains → tub backs up. Same conclusion if the sink and tub share a branch downstream of the blockage.
  • Multiple fixtures slow at once. Mainline blockage; do not keep using water.
  • Sewage in basement floor drain after a flush. Escalate immediately. Stop using all water in the house. The blockage is severe and the next flush will overflow into the basement.

The blockage causes, in rough order of frequency for WA pre-1970 housing:

  1. Side-sewer tree-root intrusion. Pacific Northwest signature failure. Doug fir, cedar, and big-leaf maple roots find every joint in pre-1970 clay-tile or Orangeburg laterals.
  2. Mainline grease, paper, and “flushable” wipe accumulation. Wipes do not break down. They are responsible for an enormous share of sewer backups nationwide.
  3. Cast-iron internal scaling. Pre-1970 cast-iron DWV pipe corrodes from inside; channel narrows progressively.
  4. Sagging belly in the side sewer. Negative slope from soil settlement; collects debris.
  5. Collapsed Orangeburg pipe. Bituminous fiber sewer pipe used in Seattle and other WA cities from about 1945 to 1972. Eventually deforms and collapses — a signature WA failure.
  6. Tree-root intrusion in clay-tile joints. Same as cause 1 but mechanism is roots entering between sections, not crushing the pipe.

Why it matters to a homeowner

A tub-on-flush backup is not a problem you should snake yourself — at least not before scoping. A snake might break through a root mass and restore flow temporarily, but if the underlying cause is Orangeburg collapse or a cast-iron scale obstruction, you’ll be back in the same spot in three weeks, having pushed debris further into the line.

The right next step is a sewer scope — a camera inspection of the line from a cleanout to the city main. In Seattle in 2026, scopes typically run $250–$550. The scope tells you whether you need:

  • Hydro-jetting ($350–$800) — high-pressure water clears roots and grease.
  • Spot repair ($1,500–$4,000) — dig and replace one section.

Washington note

Three patterns are uniquely WA:

Orangeburg laterals (Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, Spokane housing built 1945–1972) are nearing the end of any reasonable service life. If your house is from this era and you’ve never had the side sewer scoped, budgeting for a scope and possible replacement is just basic homeownership. Trenchless pipe-bursting through the original lateral is often the fastest fix; expect $8,000–$15,000 for a typical Seattle bungalow with a 60-foot run.

Seattle side-sewer ownership. Per Seattle Municipal Code, the homeowner owns the side sewer to the public main — even where it runs under public right-of-way. Atmospheric river effects. Heavy rain events in Seattle’s combined sewer area can briefly surcharge the system, causing temporary backups in basement floor drains. This usually passes within hours and isn’t a side-sewer issue per se — but it’s worth distinguishing from a chronic blockage.
