Short definition

Sewage smell from a drain means sewer gas is escaping into your house. The most common causes are a dry P-trap (fixture not used in months), a failed toilet wax ring, or a blocked plumbing vent. The first move is to run water in every drain for 30 seconds — that alone fixes about half of sewer-smell calls.

What it is

Every drain in your house has a P-trap, a U-shaped pipe that holds about a cup of water. That water is the only thing keeping sewer gas — methane, hydrogen sulfide, the works — from entering the room through the drain. When the seal breaks, gas comes up.

The seal can break in five ways:

  1. Trap evaporation. Fixture not used in weeks or months — water in the trap dries up. Common in cabins, second homes, guest bathrooms, basement floor drains. Fix: run water 30 seconds. For long-vacant traps, add a tablespoon of mineral oil to slow future evaporation.
  2. Failed toilet wax ring. Sewer gas leaks past the seal where the toilet meets the closet flange. Usually paired with the toilet starting to rock or visible water staining at the base.
  3. Blocked plumbing vent. Roof vent stack capped by a bird’s nest, ice, moss, or debris. With the vent blocked, water draining past a trap can siphon the trap dry. Symptom: smell that returns 24 hours after running water.
  4. Cracked DWV pipe in wall or attic. Sewer gas leaks where you can’t see the pipe. Diagnosed by smoke or peppermint testing — pro work.
  5. Drum trap with a cracked plug. Pre-1950 Seattle and Tacoma craftsman bathrooms used drum traps instead of P-traps; the screw-in plug at the top can crack and leak gas. This is one of the more common WA-specific causes.

Less common: a failed AAV (air-admittance valve), garbage disposal trapped food, a slab leak, or tree-root intrusion in a side sewer pulling gas back into the house.

Why it matters to a homeowner

Sewer gas is unpleasant but rarely acutely dangerous in residential concentrations. The bigger problem is what it signals — a real failure somewhere in your plumbing. A persistently smelly basement floor drain is telling you to check whether other fixtures are dry, whether your vent stack is clear, and whether a hidden leak is also present.

The first 30 seconds of diagnosis costs nothing: run water in every drain in the house — sinks, tubs, showers, floor drains, even the rarely-used guest bathroom. Wait an hour. If the smell is gone, it was trap evaporation. If it returns within a day, you’ve got something more involved — vent, wax ring, or DWV.

When a plumber says they need to do a “smoke test” or “peppermint test,” they’re forcing trace material through the DWV system to find leaks invisible from the surface. Expect $200–$400 for a thorough diagnostic; the repair varies by what they find.

Common failure modes

  • Trap evaporation — vacant fixture; refill water + optional mineral oil top.
  • Failed toilet wax ring — companion symptom to a rocking toilet.
  • Blocked vent stack — moss, debris, ice, bird’s nest; rooftop inspection.
  • Cracked DWV pipe — hidden in wall or attic; smoke test diagnosis.
  • Drum trap plug failure — pre-1950 craftsman bathrooms.
  • Failed AAV — where AAVs are installed; replace.

Common variants

  • Single-drain smell vs. whole-house ambient. Single drain = local trap or vent. Ambient = wax ring, vent stack, or DWV crack.
  • Sewer smell during rain only vs. constant. Rain-only = roof-vent flashing or vent terminus issue. Constant = dry trap or wax ring.
  • Sewer smell vs. rotten-egg from hot water. Rotten egg in hot water is anaerobic bacteria in the water heater (often paired with a magnesium anode and sulfate-rich well water). Different problem, different fix — see anode rod.

Washington note

A few WA-specific patterns:

Cabin and second-home trap evaporation is widespread on Hood Canal, the San Juans, the Methow, and the Olympic Peninsula. Cabins closed for the winter come back to a sewer-gas-filled bathroom because the traps dried out. Adding a tablespoon of mineral oil to each trap on the way out slows evaporation by months. Cabin winterization checklists should include this.

Atmospheric river surcharge. Seattle’s combined sewer system can briefly back-pressure during heavy rain events, pushing gas up through poorly vented basement floor drains. Smell after a major rain is often this; it passes in a day.

Drum traps in pre-1950 craftsman bathrooms (Ballard, Wallingford, Tacoma’s North End, Bellingham’s Eldridge, Spokane’s South Hill) are a chronic source of sewer-gas complaints. Most modern plumbers want to replace these with conventional P-traps when the bathroom is opened for any other work — they’re harder to clean, more failure-prone, and the plug seal is the usual leak point.

Tree-root intrusion in side sewers (more common in pre-1970 PNW housing with clay-tile or Orangeburg laterals) can pull sewer gas back through the soil and into a house’s crawl space. If the smell is in the crawl space rather than at a drain, a sewer scope is the right next step.
