Short definition

A worn faucet O-ring is a hardened, flattened, or cracked rubber seal inside a faucet body that no longer holds water back. It’s the most common cause of single-handle faucet drips. Replacement is a brand-specific rebuild kit ($5-$25) and a 30-minute job. O-rings typically last 5–10 years before they need swapping.

What it is

A faucet has several rubber O-rings doing different jobs: cartridge O-rings inside the cartridge body, spout O-rings that seal the swivel base, and stem-packing O-rings around handle stems. Each one fails differently:

  • Spout drip with handles closed — usually a worn seat washer or cartridge O-ring at the main shutoff seal.
  • Base seep when faucet is on — worn spout O-rings around the swivel.
  • Handle leak when faucet is on — worn stem-packing O-ring or escutcheon seal.

Identify the brand and faucet type before buying parts. Delta, Moen, Pfister, Kohler, and American Standard all have brand-specific rebuild kits. Universal kits work for compression faucets but not for cartridge or ceramic-disc designs. Bring the old part to the hardware store for a visual match if unsure.

The four ways an O-ring fails:

  • Hardening. Rubber cures over years and loses elasticity.
  • Compression set. O-ring flattens permanently and stops springing back to seal.
  • Chlorine/chloramine attack. Common in Seattle’s chloraminated water supply.
  • Mineral encrustation. Hard-water buildup (Spokane, Eastside) prevents proper seating.

Why it matters to a homeowner

Replacing an O-ring is one of the highest-ROI plumbing repairs in the home: $5-$25 in parts, under an hour of work, and it stops a 1,800-gallon-a-year drip. A plumber’s service call for the same job runs $150-$300 in the Seattle area; the labor is the bulk of the bill.

When a plumber says “we’ll rebuild the faucet” or “it needs new seats and springs” or “the cartridge is worn,” they’re naming parts you can buy at any hardware store. The decision is whether your time is worth more than the savings — for most single-handle faucets it’s a Saturday-morning job.

Common failure modes

  • Hardened spout O-ring after 5–10 years. Most common drip cause.
  • Cracked O-ring from chloramine exposure. Seattle and other chloraminated supplies.
  • Compression-set O-ring at handle stem. Shows as a slow seep at the handle base.
  • Calcified O-ring in hard water. Spokane and Eastside private wells.
  • Wrong part installed. Universal kit in a brand-specific faucet — leaks immediately.

Common variants

  • O-ring vs. seat washer. Both rubber, both small, but different shapes. Seat washers are flat with a screw hole; O-rings are torus-shaped.
  • O-ring vs. flapper. Flappers are toilet parts. Different class entirely.
  • O-ring vs. plumber’s putty. Putty fills under fixture flanges; O-rings seal pressure connections. Not interchangeable.
