Short definition

Repeated drain clogs — clogs that return within weeks or months of being snaked — almost always mean the cause is structural, not just debris. The pattern of which drain clogs and when narrows the cause: tree roots, a sag in the line, a long unvented branch, grease in a kitchen line, or an Orangeburg sewer that’s gradually collapsing.

What it is

A one-time clog from food, hair, or a kid’s toy clears with snaking and stays clear. A clog that comes back means something physical in the line is catching debris consistently. Snaking removes whatever is catching there now but doesn’t address the catching surface itself.

The diagnostic decision tree:

  • Single-fixture recurring clog → trap arm too long, sloped wrong, or a galvanized-to-CI step-down at a transition.
  • Single-line recurring clog (kitchen branch is the most common) → grease coating the pipe wall; needs hydro-jetting, not just augering.
  • Whole-house recurring clog → main sewer issue (root intrusion, belly, partial collapse, side-sewer failure).
  • Same time of year recurring (especially spring or fall) → root intrusion. Roots are most active during those seasons in WA.
  • After every heavy rain → vent or surcharge issue, not a debris clog.

Why it matters to a homeowner

Three or four service calls a year add up. A $250–$550 sewer-camera scope is usually the next step after the third repeat clog — it converts “we cleared it again” into “here’s what’s actually happening down there.” Once the cause is known, the right remediation can be scheduled instead of running on the same emergency loop.

The expensive surprise: an Orangeburg or partially-collapsed line that has been “managed” with annual snaking for years often needs replacement urgently when finally scoped. A scope earlier saves money.

Diagnostic next steps

  1. Sewer-camera inspection — visualize what snaking can’t fix.
  2. Hydro-jet for grease and scale (after the camera confirms condition).
  3. Root cutter pre-pass for tree roots.
  4. Section replacement, lining, or bursting for structural failure.

Common underlying causes

  • Tree roots regrowing through the same joint — cut, then re-grow within 6–18 months.
  • Belly or sag in the line — solids accumulate at the low spot.
  • Orangeburg deformation — ovalized pipe restricts flow.
  • Galvanized supply meeting CI drain at a corroded transition — constant clog point.
  • Disposer grease building up in cold pipe coatings between cleanings.
