Short definition

Residential sump pumps come in two main configurations. A submersible sump pump is a sealed motor-and-pump unit that sits at the bottom of the sump pit, fully underwater. A pedestal (column) sump pump has the motor mounted on a tall pedestal above the pit and connects down to a pump at the bottom by a long shaft. Submersibles are quieter and last longer; pedestals are cheaper and easier to service.

What it is

Submersible. The motor and pump are housed in a single sealed unit at the bottom of the pit. The surrounding water cools the motor in operation. Quiet, because the motor is underwater and the pit lid stays closed. Lifespan typically 7–15 years. More expensive up front and slightly harder to service — replacement usually means lifting the whole unit out.

Pedestal (column). The motor sits on a vertical column above the pit, exposed to basement air and visible above the lid. A long shaft connects down to the impeller in the pit at the bottom. Air-cooled, so it can sit for long periods between cycles without overheating. Lifespan typically 5–10 years because the motor sees more dust and moisture variation. Noisier because it runs in open air, but easier to service: the motor is right there, and the pit doesn’t have to be drained to inspect it.

Why it matters to a homeowner

In a Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, or Bellingham basement that gets significant winter use — laundry, finished space, even regular access — a submersible is almost always the right choice. Quieter operation matters when the basement is occupied, and the longer lifespan offsets the higher purchase price over a 10-year horizon.

A pedestal still makes sense in unfinished basements, vacation cabins, crawlspaces, and shallow pits where there isn’t enough water depth to keep a submersible’s motor cool. Pedestals are also faster to install in an emergency — the basin doesn’t have to be drained completely to drop the pump in.

Decision factors

Submersible better when:

  • Basement is finished or used regularly — quieter operation matters.
  • Pit is deep enough (most modern pits are).
  • Long-term reliability is a priority.
  • The home is a vacation property — submersibles tolerate unattended duty better.

Pedestal better when:

  • Budget is tight.
  • Easier service access is a priority.
  • The pit is shallow — not enough water depth to keep a submersible’s motor cool.
  • Quick emergency replacement is needed before the next storm.

Common failure modes

Submersible:

  • Motor seal failure → water enters the motor → burnout. Usually means full unit replacement.
  • Float switch sticking — most common single failure across both types.
  • Impeller jamming on debris — clean the pit periodically.

Pedestal:

  • Motor bearings wear out — recognizable as a mechanical rumble before failure.
  • Belt or shaft alignment issues.
  • More dust intrusion at the motor over the years.

Both: power loss, float switch stuck, debris in pit, check-valve failure causing short-cycling.

Washington note

WA basement homes are submersible territory. The combination of high winter water tables, 35–40 inches of annual rainfall in Puget Sound, and finished or semi-finished basements in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, and Olympia means most pumps run frequently November through April. Quiet operation and long lifespan win out, and most WA pump replacements switch from pedestal to submersible rather than replacing pedestal in kind.

Spokane and other eastern WA homes deal more with snowmelt than continuous rain, so pumps run less. Pedestal pumps are still common there in unfinished basements where motor noise doesn’t matter and budget does. For any WA finished-basement remodel, plan on a submersible plus a battery backup as the modern standard.
