What it is

The full procedure:
Step 1 — Cut the water supply
- Well-fed cabin: Turn off the well pump at its breaker, then close the isolation valve from the pressure tank to the house.
- Municipal-fed cabin: Close the meter shutoff or the main isolation valve at the building.
Step 2 — Drain hot and cold lines
- Open the lowest fixture in the house (often a basement laundry tap or an outside hose bib if supplied from inside) — water gravity-drains.
- Open the highest fixture (an upstairs sink) to break the vacuum.
- For long horizontal runs, attach a small air compressor to a hose-bib connection (40–50 psi maximum; higher pressures can damage fixtures) and push residual water through the lines.
Step 3 — Drain the water heater
- Turn off the gas supply or shut off the breaker for an electric tank
- Let the tank cool for several hours
- Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the tank’s base
- Open the TPR valve or any hot tap upstairs to vent
- Drain the tank to a safe location (not into a finished space)

Step 6 — Appliances
- Dishwasher: drain through cycle, pour 1 cup antifreeze in the bottom

- Ice maker: shut off supply, run remaining cubes, drain reservoir
- Whole-house water filter: drain housing, leave canister loose
Step 7 — Outdoor
- Winterize the irrigation system with compressor blow-out
- Disconnect garden hoses from sillcocks
- Drain hose bibs through their internal isolation valves if present
- Drain pool / hot tub / outdoor fountain per manufacturer
Step 8 — Final settings
- Set thermostat fully off (if completely drained) or 55 °F (as a backup safety layer)
